MATTHEW JOHNSON

Dr. Matthew Johnson is the founder and family medicine physician at Free Range Direct Primary Care in Charlottesville, VA. He emphasizes a patient‑first model that eliminates insurance bureaucracy, offering unlimited visits, extended appointment times, and direct access via phone, text, or video. His practice focuses on preventive care, patient education, and building long‑term relationships so families feel heard and empowered to manage their health.

Born and raised in Greeneville, Tennessee, Dr. Johnson earned a B.S. in Microbiology from the University of Tennessee before attending the Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine in Blacksburg, VA. He completed his family medicine residency at the University of South Carolina, serving as chief resident, and then spent several years providing care in rural underserved areas of South Carolina and Pennsylvania through the National Health Service Corps. After serving as medical director for St. Luke’s Rural Health Centers and as a faculty attending physician for their family medicine residency, he launched Free Range DPC to bring his philosophy of accessible, personalized primary care to the Charlottesville community.
